Anthropic announced on August 29 that weekly limits in Claude Code are being "permanently raised" by 25 percent for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, starting September 14. The announcement has 5.7 million views and a Community Note stapled to it.
The note exists because of the second sentence: “Until then, the current 50% increase will be in place.”
Do the match. Everyone has been running on limits 50 percent above base. The permanent change sets them 25 percent above base. For every actual user, September 14 is a cut, and you don't have to take the Community Note's word for it, because Anthropic's own follow-up tweet concedes it plainly: “Compared to today, this works out to a 17% reduction in weekly limits on Claude Code.”
A cut announced as a raise
The 50 percent was introduced as promotional. Promotions end, but people got used to the promotion and your competition feels like they're giving more usage.
Nobody experiences their plan as the number printed on it. They experience what happened when they used it last week, and last week everyone had the 50. Leading with "permanently raising" when the lived change is minus 17 percent makes the end user feel more angry.
Get rid of the weekly limit altogether
Get rid of the weekly limit, I've already argued why it should not exist. The five-hour window is a fair rate limiter: hit it, lose an afternoon, plan around it. The weekly window is the one you cannot plan around, because you can't see your burn rate until you've burnt it, and hitting it on a Wednesday ends your week and you can't reset until Saturday.
What I'd have done instead
Keep the 50 and say so. The goodwill from "the promotional increase is now permanent" would have been worth more than 17 percent of compute, at the exact moment the satisfaction lead is the main thing Claude still clearly holds and the competition has caught up on everything else. Failing that, lead with the true sentence: we're ending a promotion, the permanent floor is higher than it used to be, here's the date. Say you're having compute issues and because of that we had to end the promotion even though we wanted to extend it. People accept that. What they don't accept is being told a cut is a raise.
Anthropic has reversed a limits decision before, when Fable left subscriptions and came back capped after users pushed for it. The pattern there was the same as here: announce, absorb the backlash, adjust. September 14 is two weeks out. Could Anthropic also reverse decision here? We all hope so.
